After a 5 year hiatus Sofar Sounds, the intimate don't know who is playing or where you will see the show until 36 hours before, is back! And I was there for the return!
Sofar puts on intimate shows in secret, unexpected spots. It is all built around how the music feels in the space. Artists and songs hit different if you are in someone's backyard versus a huge room where you are standing with strangers and the sound quality may not be the best.
From my perspective these shows are a dream and a challenge all at once. You are right there in the thick of it, close enough to catch every expression and every small moment, but you also have to move carefully and read the room so you are never the guy blocking someone's view. That kind of closeness is exactly the sort of limitation I love working with.
This time around the stage went to three local acts, Jhane, Uncle Auntie, and BeckyD, each getting that rare intimate platform to share what they do. Memphis is having a real creative moment and Sofar is exactly the kind of thing that gives homegrown talent a place to shine. Nights like this are why I love photographing this city. Enjoy!
