Memphis Symphony Orchestra · Handel

Sunset Symphony is back! At least for me it is. I haven't been to the Sunset Symphony since it was down by the river probably in the mid-2000s. So I was very happy it was practically in my backyard over at Overton Park Shell. I've been fortunate enough to have photographed at the Shell quite a bit now and I think my photos have gotten better over time. With a subject like this they should be!

What made this one special was having two conductors on the same stage. Music Director Robert Moody and Conductor Chair Kyle J. Dickson. I'd never seen either of them before and I wasn't prepared for how much presence conducting requires. There's a physicality to it that I don't think people fully appreciate until they're watching it up close through a lens. The way they communicate with an orchestra without saying a word is something to see.

Memphis is lucky to have an orchestra this good. Even luckier to have a place like the Shell to hear them in. Enjoy!
